Something to consider...In our experience, First Generation college students are making amazing strides when given the skills necessary to advocate for themselves. It is amazing how students new to this experience have no idea how to speak to a professor or that it is acceptable for them to do so. It's so easy to say, "Go and talk to that professor" when many have no experience in doing so and they think, "What does that even mean???". We have learned to teach them the vital behaviors it takes to do just that and it helps when we walk with them to that professor's office and "coach" them along the way. Once they do that for the first time, it breaks down so many other barriers! Most of our students are intelligent, just skill deficient.
